About Us
Water Assessment Overview
Every five years, MWD must conduct evaluations of potential contamination sources in the State Water Project and Colorado River source waters as required by DDW. The watershed sanitary surveys for Colorado River water were updated in 2015, while the State Water Project assessment was updated in 2016. Irvine Ranch Water District updated their Santiago Reservoir (Irvine Lake) watershed assessment in 2014.
Vulnerability Analysis
Colorado River water faces contamination risks primarily from recreational activities, urban/stormwater runoff, expanding residential development, and wastewater discharge. Northern California's State Water Project sources are most vulnerable to urban/stormwater runoff, wildlife, agricultural operations, recreational activities, and sewage systems. Santiago Reservoir water supplies face highest risks from landfills/dumps, grazing animals, and solid waste management systems.
Source Water Assessments
The EPA requires water providers to complete Source Water Assessments (SWA) using information from watershed sanitary surveys. MWD completed their SWA in December 2002, while Santiago Reservoir's most recent SWA was completed in 2001. These assessments help determine vulnerability levels and whether additional protective measures are necessary.
Groundwater Assessment
South Coast Water District's groundwater source assessment (June 2007) identified local vulnerabilities from nearby gas stations, dry cleaning operations, and a sewage treatment facility. The District conducts rigorous testing to ensure well water meets all Safe Drinking Water Standards.
