WATER SOURCES INFORMATION: Your municipal water is a combination of imported surface water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWDSC) and local groundwater resources. MWDSC imports water from the Colorado River and the State Water Project which draws from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Starting in 2017, San Clemente began receiving water from the Irvine Ranch Water District processed through the Baker Water Treatment Plant as a supplemental supply to ensure consistent service to residents.

UNDERSTANDING TAP WATER CONTAMINANTS: Municipal water sources include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land surfaces or through underground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances resulting from human and animal activities. Potential contaminants include:

  • Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants including salts and metals, which can occur naturally or result from urban runoff, wastewater discharge, oil/gas production, and farming
  • Radioactive contaminants that may be naturally occurring or result from oil/gas production activities
  • Nitrogen-based herbicides from various sources including agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds that are byproducts of industrial processes
