Since 1769, St. Charles, Missouri, a historically significant city along the Missouri River, has welcomed visitors to its shores. Founded by French Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette, the city was originally named Les Petites Cotes ("The Little Hills"), which eventually evolved into Saint Charles. The community became a thriving trading hub that embraced travelers from various nations.
Due to its strategic position on the Missouri River and gateway to the western territory known as the Louisiana Purchase, St. Charles became a crucial destination for countless pioneers. In 1804, William Clark and Meriwether Lewis departed from Saint Charles up the Missouri River, seeking a route to the Pacific Ocean as commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson, who had recently acquired the Louisiana Purchase from France.
St. Charles served as Missouri's first state capital from 1821 to 1826 and was home to pioneer Daniel Boone and his family. Boone created Boone's Lick Trail through the Saint Charles countryside, which later developed into the Santa Fe Trail and subsequently the Oregon Trail – essential pathways for early settlers seeking new opportunities in the western United States.
Today, more than 65,000 residents call St. Charles home. The city houses headquarters for companies including Aspect, Our365, RX System, NewCo Enterprises, Patriot Machine, and Client Services, while also hosting regional offices for Coca Cola Enterprises, Sysco, and American Freightways. As the oldest city on the Missouri River, St. Charles maintains a sister city relationship with Ludwigsburg, Germany.
