Maryville was established on September 1, 1845. The town's name originated from Amos Graham, the first postmaster, who named it after his wife, Mary. Graham was a prominent pioneer in what would become downtown Maryville and served as one of the first Nodaway County Commissioners and the initial county clerk when the county was formally organized in 1845.
Maryville, located near the geographic center of Nodaway County, was designated as the county seat that same year. The first courthouse was constructed in 1846, previously county affairs were conducted in the home of early settler I.N. Prather. A second courthouse was built in 1853, one of only three in the city's history.
The current courthouse, built in 1881, was designed by Edmond Jacques Eckel and George R. Mann, who later designed the Arkansas State Capitol. The courthouse is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features a decorative pineapple sculpture, symbolizing welcome. The original court complex included one of the nation's few rotating jails, which was demolished in 1984 and replaced with a new structure.
The city experienced several incorporation changes - first incorporated in 1856, dissolved in 1857, reincorporated in 1859, revoked during the Civil War, reincorporated in 1869, disincorporated again in 1869, and finally formally incorporated on July 19, 1869, coinciding with the arrival of the Kansas City, St. Joseph, and Council Bluffs Railroad (later acquired by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad). The Wabash Railroad arrived in 1879. Currently, no railroads operate within the city or anywhere in Nodaway County.
