St. George began emerging as a tourism destination in 1965 with the construction of the area's first 9-hole golf course, Dixie Red Hills, situated behind the large red bluff at Sunset Boulevard and Bluff Street. Since then, 12 additional golf courses have been developed in Washington County, earning the region the nickname "The Palm Springs of Utah."
During the 1960s, as vehicles with air conditioning became more widely available and home cooling units more affordable, people who previously avoided St. George due to its extreme summer temperatures began planning visits to the area. Many eventually established permanent residences in southwestern Utah.
Today, St. George stands as Washington County's largest city and Utah's eighth-largest urban center. Its metropolitan area houses nearly 160,000 residents and has consistently ranked among the nation's fastest-growing regions for the past two decades, even surpassing Las Vegas in per capita growth. New residents from across the country and Canada are drawn to St. George's scenic beauty, excellent healthcare, mild climate, active lifestyle, and proximity to exceptional outdoor recreation opportunities, including Snow Canyon State Park, Quail Creek and Sand Hollow Reservoirs, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Lake Powell, and Grand Canyon National Park.
