Water Source Information
The Citico Water Treatment Plant in Chattanooga draws surface water from the Tennessee River. We collaborate with state authorities to assess our water source's vulnerability to potential contamination. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has prepared a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP) Report for untreated water sources serving this system.
The SWAP Report evaluates untreated water sources' susceptibility to contamination. All community water systems treat and regularly test their water to ensure safety. Water sources are rated as reasonably susceptible (high), moderately susceptible (moderate), or slightly susceptible (low) based on geological factors and human activities near the source. Tennessee American Water's source is rated as reasonably susceptible to potential contamination.
Water System Security
Following the events of September 2001, we understand customer concerns about water security. We encourage the public to report any suspicious activities at utility facilities, including treatment plants, tanks, and fire hydrants by calling 1-866-736-6420.
Health Information
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to contaminants in tap water than the general population. Immunocompromised persons—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants—may face heightened infection risks. These individuals should seek advice about drinking water from their healthcare providers.
EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate measures to reduce infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
