About Us
Is our municipal water safe? Yes, our water meets all EPA health standards. We've conducted numerous tests for over 80 potential contaminants in our water supply. As shown in our detailed chart, only 13 of these contaminants were detected at measurable levels.
Where does our water come from? Your treated surface water comes from the Nolichucky River. We work diligently to protect our water from contaminants and collaborate with the State to evaluate our water supply's vulnerability to potential pollution sources.
The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has prepared a Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP) Report for our untreated water sources. This report assesses the susceptibility of untreated water sources to potential contamination. To ensure safe water, our public water system treats and routinely tests all water.
Our water sources have been classified as moderately susceptible to potential contamination based on geological factors and human activities near the water supply. The Jonesborough sources specifically rated as moderately susceptible.
For a complete view of Tennessee's Source Water Assessment Program, summaries, susceptibility scorings, and the full TDEC report to EPA, visit https://www.tn.gov/environment/article/wr-wq-source-water-assessment or contact the Water Program for specific assessment copies.
Why are there contaminants in my water? All municipal water, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791. For questions about your water, contact our Billing Office at 423-753-1030.
How can I get involved? Our Board of Mayor and Alderman meets on the second Monday of each month at Town Hall, 123 Boone St. at 6:00 p.m. We welcome public participation in these meetings. Our water system meets all state and EPA requirements for regular testing and reporting to ensure water safety. Results of unregulated contaminant analysis are available upon request.
