Union City Water Department Municipal Water Report Information

Union City serves as the county seat of Obion County in northwest Tennessee. The name "Union City" was bestowed by General George Gibbs in 1852, marking the junction or "union" of two important railways: the Nashville/Northwestern Railroad (extending to Hickman, KY) and the Mobile, Alabama/Ohio Railroad. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Union City has a population of 10,895 residents.

The City of Union City prides itself on providing responsive and fiscally responsible government services through ethical practices and teamwork. Through strategic planning, Union City works to enhance safety, health, welfare and growth across residential, industrial, and commercial sectors of the community.

Union City functions as the Regional Trade Center for northwest Tennessee and southwest Kentucky, recently classified as a micropolitan area by the U.S. Census. Strategically positioned within the U.S., the city is located 140 miles north of Memphis and 175 miles west of Nashville.

Transportation access is comprehensive, featuring all four transportation modes:

  • Rail: Union City is directly served by the Canadian National (CN) Railroad, the only rail provider in the U.S. offering coast-to-coast service from Atlantic to Pacific and Canada to the Gulf Coast.
  • Water: The Port of Cates Landing Deepwater/Slackwater Port in neighboring Lake County, approximately 20 miles west, was scheduled for operation in 2014.
  • Air: Everett Stewart Regional Airport, located 4 miles southeast of Union City, features a 6,500-foot runway with parallel taxiway. It's among only 11 Tennessee airports equipped with ILS (Instrument Landing System) and can accommodate 67% of popular corporate business jets at maximum capacity.
  • Highway: Union City is served by U.S. 51 (connecting to Kentucky's Interstate System and I-55) and SR 22 (providing direct access to I-40 near Jackson). SR 45 was scheduled for four-lane upgrade, while Interstate 69 was under construction.

Union City's historical significance dates back to the 1850s when railroads played a crucial role in West Tennessee's development. The city was incorporated in 1867, and while much has changed in 150+ years, Union City honors its heritage. Downtown features the renovated Capitol Theatre, Kiwanis Park, Obion County Museum, and Church Street Railroad Depot, alongside restaurants, antique shops, specialty stores, and clothing retailers.
