Fort Stewart's cantonment area is situated 42 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia. The installation encompasses 279,270 acres (spanning 32 x 17 miles across portions of five Georgia counties), making it the largest army installation east of the Mississippi River and the largest federal landholding in Georgia.
The Fort Stewart Reservation is strategically positioned and resourced to support the 3rd Infantry Division's training and deployment requirements. The extensive property provides soldiers with exceptional training opportunities. Most of the Division's weapon systems can fire simultaneously using the Post's numerous ranges and impact zones.
The training area also offers sufficient maneuver space to allow an entire Brigade Combat Team to operate in tactical field conditions. Additionally, the Reservation can accommodate training for 50,000 reserve component soldiers annually. Since approximately 80% of the Reservation is wetland, the integrity of the area as a military training site is preserved for years to come.
Rapid deployability of the Division is ensured by Fort Stewart's proximity to the Port of Savannah and Hunter Army Airfield. The Port is a major deep water facility capable of simultaneously loading all nine of the Navy's SL7 fast sealift ships. Located just 40 miles from Fort Stewart and five miles from Hunter Army Airfield, the Port is easily accessed via interstate road networks and multiple rail lines leading directly to dockside.
Hunter Army Airfield features the longest runway on the east coast, and its facilities on the 5,372-acre airfield can accommodate both 747 and C5B Aircraft. Hunter is also accessible by rail and major road networks, with driving time from Fort Stewart being only 45-60 minutes.
