About Us
Why might contaminants appear in my tap water? Both tap and bottled water typically contain at least trace amounts of various contaminants. As water flows over land surfaces or through underground soil layers, it naturally collects minerals and organic materials.
The presence of these substances doesn't always indicate a health risk. For comprehensive information about contaminants and potential health impacts, residents can contact the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 or visit http://www.Epa.Gov/safewater.
Where does Walla Walla's water originate? The City utilizes a blend of surface and groundwater sources. In 2017, approximately 88% came from surface water sourced from the protected Mill Creek Watershed - an uninhabited, pristine 36-square-mile region straddling the Washington-Oregon border in the Blue Mountains. The remaining supply comes from deep wells positioned throughout the City.
How is our water treated? Walla Walla employs a dual disinfection system combining ozone and chlorine treatments to eliminate harmful bacteria and microorganisms. This disinfection approach represents one of the most significant public health advancements of the 20th century.
Should certain individuals take extra precautions? Some residents may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than others. Those with compromised immune systems - including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, some elderly individuals, and infants - may face higher risks from infections. These residents should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding their drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risks are available via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).

Walla Walla Water Division Municipal Water Company and EPAWalla Walla Water Division Municipal Water Report Info
In the mid-1900s, development in the Spokane Valley was primarily driven by land speculators. With minimal infrastructure investment and remote marketing campaigns, small land management companies believed they could transform low-value properties into profitable agricultural assets.
One such venture was the Vera Electric Water Company, responsible for Vera Pump House #1, which workers hand-dug in 1906. The company was established in 1908 by local entrepreneurs Donald K. McDonald, A.C. Jamison, and Andrew Good. McDonald named the company after his daughter.
As apple orchards flourished in the area, the town of Vera was incorporated. The historic Vera Pump House was constructed using stones excavated during canal development; these same stones appear in many historic homes throughout the region. Local historians believe renowned masonry craftsman Hans Vinge built the pump house's stone structure. The pump itself extends more than one hundred feet underground and remains operational today under Vera Water and Power management.
Evolution to public ownership: Initially, Vera obtained electricity from the downtown-to-Liberty Lake electric railroad before purchasing power from Washington Water Power. In the mid-1930s, Vera reorganized as an irrigation district, transforming from a private corporation to a public utility. On January 1, 1946, Vera became a Bonneville Power Administration customer to utilize low-cost electricity generated by Columbia River dams. The utility celebrated its centennial anniversary on April 25, 2008.
