About Us
During 2016, Renton sourced its municipal water from four distinct supplies: five downtown wells located in Liberty and Planks River Parks drawing from the Cedar Valley Aquifer; Springbrook Springs in southern Renton; the Maplewood wellfield at Maplewood Course; and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) which receives water from Cedar plank and Tolt waters.
The SPU connection began in January 2012 and primarily serves as backup during peak summer demand. In 2016, SPU provided approximately 32.2 million gallons used mainly by the Renton Boeing plant, while combined sources produced 2.55 billion gallons total.
Water from downtown wells and Springbrook Springs requires minimal treatment. Chlorine is added to eliminate bacteria and protect the distribution system during emergencies like main breaks. Sodium hydroxide slightly raises pH to prevent plumbing corrosion. In Renton Hill, Talbot Hill and Western Hill areas, ortho polyphosphates reduce corrosion in older cast iron water mains. Fluoride is added for dental health protection.
Downtown wells contributed 56.6% of Renton's water in 2016, while Springbrook Springs provided 21.3%. The Maplewood wellfield's water undergoes additional treatment to remove manganese, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia before distribution. These three wells produced 22.1% of the total supply in 2016.
