West Virginia Water Utility Companies

The Weirton Area Water Board has partnered with Wayne White Construction to implement new Mueller stereo read meters throughout their service area. These advanced meters offer precision readings to the nearest 10 gallons with 100% accuracy. The system utilizes drive-by receivers in utility vehicles and stores 107 days of water usage data.

This technology benefits customers by providing detailed water usage patterns by hour, day, or month. It also allows WAWB staff to detect high consumption or potential leaks promptly, helping residents avoid unnecessary costs from household water leaks. Installation teams carry official ID cards. For questions about meter installation, contact James White Construction at 304-748-8181.

Boil Orders
Boil orders are precautionary measures mandated by the EPA. They're typically issued after line breaks or events exposing treated water to air. During a boil order, customers should bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before use. Test results typically take 18-24 hours to process. Residents can receive alerts through the Heads Up Community smartphone app or by subscribing to the City of Weirton website notification system. For more information about boil orders, contact the lab at 304-797-8566.

Water Appearance Concerns
Milky-looking water usually results from trapped air in water lines. Cold water from the treatment plant warms during distribution, causing dissolved gases to release. To confirm this is the cause, fill a clear glass and observe—if it clears from bottom to top, it's simply air. If clarity doesn't improve, contact the Water Plant at 304-797-8566.

Lead and Copper
While WAWB's water does NOT contain elevated lead levels, it's important to note that lead exposure can come from service lines and home plumbing materials. To minimize potential exposure, flush taps for 30 seconds to 2 minutes after water has been sitting. For concerns about lead, consider water testing. Information is available via the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

Source Water Protection
The Weirton Area Water Board worked with Thrasher Engineering to update their Source Water Protection Plan in 2017. While the surface water intake has higher susceptibility to contamination, this doesn't mean contamination will occur—only that conditions exist where water could be impacted by potential contaminant sources. The source water assessment report is available at the WAWB office or through WVBPH at 304-558-2981.

Additional Monitoring
As of December 20, 2016, the EPA requires WAWB to monitor for 30 additional unregulated contaminants. This monitoring helps determine whether these substances require established standards. This testing will occur between July 2018 and June 2019 in compliance with EPA guidelines.

Water Quality Information
All water sources, including bottled water, may contain trace contaminants that don't necessarily pose health risks. EPA regulations limit contaminants in public water, while FDA establishes similar protections for bottled water. Immunocompromised individuals, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, the elderly, and infants may be more vulnerable to waterborne contaminants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers. Guidelines on reducing infection risks are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
