Weymouth Water Department Municipal Water Report Info

Weymouth stands as the Commonwealth's second oldest township, established in 1622 as the Wessagusset colony. Renamed in 1635, the community received a boost with 100 settlers arriving from its English namesake. Initially a fishing and agricultural settlement, Weymouth evolved into a prominent shoe manufacturing hub by the late 19th century. The town's landscape showcases elements from every historical period, from colonial times through modern suburbanization.

Contemporary Weymouth functions as a well-established residential suburb just south of Boston, strategically positioned near the intersection of Route I-93 (128) and Route 3. Residents enjoy convenient access to both Cape Cod and Greater Boston, with three MBTA commuter rail stations offering rapid city transportation.

The town boasts significant historical landmarks, including Abigail Adams' birthplace—wife to President John Adams and mother to President John Quincy Adams. Other notable sites include the Town Civic Center District and architecturally distinctive buildings like Fogg Library, Jefferson School, and Washington School. Unlike traditional New England communities with centralized downtowns, Weymouth features four distinct village centers, each with unique historical buildings, land usage patterns, and green spaces.

Housing primarily consists of single-family homes in established neighborhoods, complemented by larger apartment and condominium complexes. Popular recreational areas include Legion Field, George Lane Beach, Lovell Field, Great Esker Park, Weston Park, Pond Meadow Park, and Webb Memorial State Park.

Business development has thrived along Weymouth's highways and local arterials. The thoroughfares feature diverse restaurants, retail establishments, and shopping plazas, while village centers host eclectic local businesses. A substantial office park sits minutes from Route 3 on Libbey Industrial Highway. Nicknamed the "South Shore's medical Mecca," Weymouth contains over 20 medical buildings housing more than 100 laboratories, physician groups, and treatment facilities. South Shore Health Systems, the town's largest employer, anchors the two-mile medical district as the region's leading healthcare provider. The Stetson Medical Center, formerly home to Stetson Shoe Company, now hosts world-class medical tenants including Boston Children's Hospital and Harbor Medical Associates.

Despite limited undeveloped space, Weymouth maintains strong growth potential. Union Point, a developing 1,400-acre mixed-use project at the former Naval Air Station South Weymouth, is anticipated to become one of the South Shore's premier transit-oriented neighborhoods. Additional development plans include revitalizing village centers, creating a Back River park and trail network, implementing energy conservation through the state's Green Communities program, improving infrastructure with Complete Streets principles, and developing a new public library.

In 2018, Massachusetts designated Weymouth as a Housing Choice Community for producing numerous new housing units supporting the state's changing demographics and economic growth. While Massachusetts home prices have risen faster than anywhere nationally, families continue choosing Weymouth for its diverse housing options, convenient transportation, premier healthcare facilities, and exceptional parks and open spaces. As long as Weymouth attracts new families and robust businesses, it will remain rich in both history and community spirit.
