West Virginia Water Utility Companies

Is there lead in my water? If present, elevated lead levels can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. West Virginia American Water is responsible for providing high-quality water but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components.

We take measures to minimize lead leaching from pipes into water by adding corrosion inhibitors to water leaving our treatment facilities. You can reduce potential lead exposure by running your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned about lead, consider having your water tested.

How hard is my water? Hardness measures calcium and magnesium concentration naturally present in water. Our hardness levels range from 24 to 66 ppm, or approximately 1 to 4 grains per gallon.

What about sodium levels? The sodium content is approximately 12.4 ppm (or mg/L).

What is the pH range? Water in our distribution system averages 7.3 pH units. A pH of 7.0 is neutral, neither acidic nor alkaline.

Is fluoride added? West Virginia American Water adds fluoride to achieve approximately 0.67 ppm to help prevent dental cavities.

Partnership for Safe Water Program: We're proud members of this partnership between water utilities and government agencies committed to exceeding federal regulations for water quality. Our facility earned the "Director's Award" in 2010 from the EPA Administrator and has continued meeting Partnership goals for 20 consecutive years.

Where does my water come from? We're fortunate to have an abundant supply from the West Fork River, a surface water source. Our treatment plant provided approximately 549 million gallons of clean water in 2018.

The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources completed a source water assessment in April 2003, which classified the West Fork River's susceptibility to contamination as high because it's a surface water body exposed above ground. For a copy of this assessment, contact DHHR at (304) 356-4298 or visit their website.
