The Town of Yorktown is a picturesque community in Northern Westchester County, New York, situated 35 miles from New York City. Its forty square miles encompass rolling hills, farmland, residential neighborhoods and light commercial areas.
Initially settled in 1683, Yorktown played a strategic role during the American Revolution. The Pines Bridge crossing of the Croton River was guarded by the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, a diverse unit including African Americans and Native Americans. The town was officially incorporated in 1788 and named to commemorate America's decisive Revolutionary War victory at Yorktown, Virginia.
Located just 35 miles from New York City, Yorktown offers residents a balanced mix of commercial, residential, and recreational opportunities. With a population exceeding 36,000, the town comprises five distinct business hamlets: Mohegan Lake, Shrub Oak, Jefferson Valley, Crompond, and Yorktown Heights, along with twelve unique residential neighborhoods each maintaining their own character and identity.
Yorktown features numerous parks and open spaces where community members enjoy activities ranging from swimming and sports to hiking nature trails and family picnics. With excellent schools, active community organizations, and dedicated civic leadership, Yorktown maintains a vibrant community atmosphere.
Yorktown's town hall was constructed in 1935 at the intersection of Underhill Avenue and Saw Mill River Road (Route 118) during supervisor Ted Hill's administration. While the police department and town court were eventually relocated, town hall continues to house key administrative offices including the supervisor's office, town clerk, finance department, assessor's office, town attorney, and building and engineering departments.
Early 1940s postcards show the original building before additional wings were added, reflecting the town's pride in its civic center. (Historical information and postcard courtesy of Postcard History Series: Yorktown available at the Yorktown Museum).
