Athens-Clarke County's history stretches back to America's earliest days. The University of Georgia was established in 1785 as the nation's first land-grant institution. Clarke County, named after Revolutionary War hero Elijah Clarke, was formed in 1801, with Athens incorporated as a town in 1805. The city was named by future Georgia governor John Milledge after Athens, Greece, the ancient center of learning and home to Plato and Aristotle's academies.
In 1990, citizens voted to unify the City of Athens and Clarke County governments, creating Georgia's second consolidated government and the nation's 28th. Founded as a center of education, Athens has endured through wars, reconstruction periods, and peacetime.
Today, Athens-Clarke County preserves its heritage through numerous historic landmarks. The area features 40 nationally registered sites, 16 nationally registered districts on the National Register of Historic Places, 12 local historic districts, and 41 individual local historic landmarks.
