Your Municipal Water Source
The primary water sources for Winder are the Mulberry River and Fort Yargo Lake. The City has implemented a comprehensive Water Protection Plan to safeguard these vital resources. Water from the Mulberry River is stored at the Honra Lane Reservoir and the Water Plant Reservoir. Under normal conditions, these sources adequately meet the city's water demands. During drought periods, Winder supplements its water production by purchasing from Barrow County, which sources from the Bear Creek Water Plant treating water from Bear Creek Reservoir and the Middle Oconee River.
Information About Potential Contaminants
Tap water, including bottled varieties, may contain small amounts of certain contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
Common contaminant sources include:
- Natural - from human, agricultural or wildlife sources
- Inorganic - naturally occurring, from urban stormwater runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater discharges, or farming
- Pesticides and Herbicides - from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic Chemicals - byproducts of industrial or domestic processes, stormwater runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive Elements - naturally occurring or from mining operations
To ensure tap water safety, the Environmental Protection Agency prescribes regulations that limit certain substances in public water systems.
