Georgia Water Utility Companies

Ever wondered about the safety of your tap water? After conducting over 140,000 tests in 2017, we at Columbia County Water Utility are proud to report that our municipal water meets or surpasses all US EPA and Georgia EPD water quality standards.

This report covers water quality data from January 1 through December 31, 2017, and provides comprehensive information about what's in your water. We'll explore source water information, statistical measurements of finished water parameters, terminology explanations, and important health information.

Water Sources
Municipal water (both tap and bottled) comes from various sources including rivers, wetlands, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and sometimes radioactive materials. It may also pick up substances from animal or human activity.

Source Water Assessment
Columbia County Water Utility completed a Source Water Assessment in April 2002, identifying potential contaminant sources that could affect our water supply. On a scale of High, Medium, and Low for potential pollutants, our water supply received a Low rating at both the Jim Blanchard Water Treatment Plant and the Clarks Hill Water Treatment Plant. This assessment is available for public review by calling (706) 863-6928 during regular business hours.

Columbia County Municipal Water Report Information

For health protection, the EPA has established guidelines limiting certain contaminants in public water systems. Similarly, FDA regulations set limits for contaminants in bottled water to provide equivalent public health protection. All municipal water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk.

More information about contaminants and potential health effects is available by calling the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general public. Immunocompromised individuals—such as cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune disorders, some elderly individuals, and infants—can be particularly susceptible to infections. These individuals should seek advice about municipal water from their healthcare providers.

EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate measures to reduce infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).
