Why This Report? The City of Milledgeville Water System is committed to providing our customers with municipal water that meets or surpasses federal and state quality standards. We're pleased that this 2016 Water Quality Report confirms we're meeting that goal. Our primary mission is delivering safe water to your residence or business daily.

We invest significantly in protecting our water resources for both present needs and future generations. The following pages show the results of our continuous testing program. This analysis demonstrates our success in meeting or exceeding standards set by Federal and State agencies to safeguard public health.

For additional information, please contact the City of Milledgeville Water and Sewerage Office at (478) 414-4052. The bottom line: we provide safe, quality municipal water 24/7, 365 days a year because we understand that clean, reliable water is vital to our community's wellbeing.

Who Provides My Water? You receive service from the City of Milledgeville Water System, an organization within the City of Milledgeville Government. We distribute treated water to customers and process wastewater safely for families and the environment. Our utility also supplies treated municipal water wholesale to the Baldwin County Water System.

Where Does My Water Come From? The City of Milledgeville, PWS ID #0090001, draws raw surface water from intake locations on the Oconee River. Two facilities process this water: the Lamar F. Ham Plant (built 1953, capacity 8.64MGD) and the James E. Baugh Plant (acquired 1994, capacity 3.88MGD).

How Is My Water Treated? The process begins by pumping untreated river water into sedimentation basins for removing large particles and initial disinfection. Next comes flocculation—gently mixing water with coagulants to form "floc" particles that settle and clarify the water. The water then passes through filters to capture smaller particles. Finally, specific chemicals are added for disinfection, with only necessary treatments like chlorine and fluoride remaining in the finished water delivered to your home.

Why Are There Contaminants? Water sources (tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals, sometimes radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal presence or human activity.

Potential contaminants include:

  • Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment, septic systems, agriculture, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) occurring naturally or from urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and residential uses
  • Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining

EPA regulations limit contaminant levels in public water systems to ensure safety. FDA establishes similar protections for bottled water. All municipal water, including bottled varieties, may reasonably contain small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (1-800-426-4791).

Milledgeville Municipal Water Report Info

Our remarkable history began in 1803 when Georgia sought a location for its new capital. This area offered both a central position and abundant natural springs, making it an ideal selection. The planned capital was named Milledgeville, honoring John Milledge, Georgia's governor (1802-1806) and the benefactor who donated land for the University of Georgia.

Situated on the Oconee River's fall line, Milledgeville holds the distinction of being the only U.S. city besides Washington D.C. specifically designed as a capital. For over six decades, it served as Georgia's capital during a significant historical period that witnessed visits from many notable figures.

Numerous area residences and structures survived periodic fires and the destructive impact of the Civil War. On one particularly cold November day, General William T. Sherman led 30,000 Federal troops into Milledgeville.

When the capital relocated to Atlanta during Reconstruction, Milledgeville experienced economic challenges. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, improvements in lighting, streets, telephone service, and water infrastructure encouraged new construction and commerce. The gradual economic recovery contributed to preserving the city's wealth of federal-style architecture, complemented by strategic Greek Revival, Victorian, and Classic Revival homes that continue to grace the cityscape today.
