All water sources, including bottled water and municipal tap water, typically contain trace amounts of various contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For detailed information about contaminants and potential health effects, residents can contact the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.

Water supply sources in Cordele include groundwater from local aquifers. As water moves through soil and rock formations, it naturally dissolves minerals and can sometimes pick up substances from human activity and wildlife. These may include:

  • Microbial contaminants from sewage systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic substances like salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff and industrial processes
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban stormwater, and residential usage
  • Organic chemicals from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
  • Radioactive materials that can be naturally occurring or result from human activities

To ensure tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. Similarly, the FDA sets standards for bottled water that provide equivalent public health protection.

Cordele Municipal Water Report Info

Cordele, known as "The Watermelon Capital of the World," is located in Crisp County, Georgia. With a population of approximately 11,608 (as of 2000 census), the city serves as the county seat. Positioned along Interstate 75, Cordele sits 140 miles south of Atlanta and 100 miles north of the Florida border.

Historically significant, the area briefly served as Georgia's temporary capital in November 1864 during the Civil War. Governor Joseph E. Brown used his country home, called "Dooly County Place," as the official capital for a short period while evading Sherman's "March to the Sea." This home was later replaced by the Suwanee Hotel in downtown Cordele, which stood until a fire destroyed it in 1994 before being rebuilt.

J.E.D. Shipp of Americus founded the community in the southern portion of Dooly County in 1888, with official incorporation occurring on December 22 of that year. The city flourished due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major railways: the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery line and the Georgia Southern and Florida. The city was named after Cordelia Hawkins, daughter of the SAM railroad president.

By 1905, Cordele's growth prompted the formation of Crisp County from southern Dooly County, with Cordele designated as the county seat. In 1930, the city established the first county-owned electric system through the Crisp County Hydroelectric System on the Flint River. The resulting Lake Blackshear has since attracted residents to its waterfront properties.
