California American Water Company - Parkway
About Us
The Parkway water system obtains its supply from deep water wells that extract groundwater from Sacramento Valley aquifers. Additionally, the system receives water purchased from the City of Sacramento. California American Water employs several treatment technologies including:
- Granular activated carbon (GAC) to remove low levels of organic chemicals
- Oxygenation processes to eliminate iron and manganese
- Chlorination for bacteriological quality assurance
- Fluoridation for dental health benefits
Water from the City of Sacramento originates from the American and Sacramento Rivers. These surface water sources undergo conventional treatment including coagulation, sedimentation, filtration with sand and anthracite filters, lime addition for corrosion control, fluoridation, and chlorine disinfection.
A Source Water Assessment (SWA) for the Parkway system was completed in February 2003. The water sources are considered most vulnerable to dry cleaners and sewer collection systems. Additional potential vulnerabilities include gas stations, septic systems, underground storage tanks, metal plating facilities, auto repair shops, and photo processing operations. Assessment reports for Sacramento's water sources completed in 2008-2010 indicated vulnerability to recreational activities, urban runoff, industrial discharge, and agricultural contaminants. Complete assessment reports are available for review at the City Clerk's office or by calling (916) 808-5011.
