Charleston Water System functions as an independent water and wastewater utility. We deliver clean water services throughout the greater Charleston area. Formally established as the Commissioners of Public Works of the City of Charleston, SC, we operate under an elected Board of Commissioners.
Our team of 430 professionals is committed to protecting public health and the environment by providing reliable, high-quality water and sewer services. The Hanahan Water Treatment Plant produces excellent drinking water distributed through our network of 1,800 miles of water mains. Our facility meets or exceeds all regulatory standards and participates in the Partnership for Safe Water.
We also manage sewer services—not stormwater—via 800 miles of collection mains, over 200 pump stations, and 12 miles of deep tunnels that transport wastewater to our treatment facility. The Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant processes approximately 23 million gallons daily, releasing purified water into Charleston harbor.
Our environmental commitment includes an ISO 14001 certified environmental management system (EMS), and we're currently pursuing ISO 14001:2015 certification. Our service area covers Charleston-North Charleston, Hanahan, Ladson, James Island, Daniel Island, Cainhoy, Thomas Island, West Ashley, Hollywood, Ravenel, and Meggett.
We also provide wholesale service to St. Johns Water Company (serving Kiawah and Seabrook Islands), Mt. Pleasant Waterworks, Dorchester County Public Works, Town of Folly Beach, Town of Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms Water and Sewer Commission, Joint Base Charleston, and Town of Lincolnville.
Our infrastructure includes 1,800 miles of water mains and 9,800 fire hydrants serving approximately 450,000 people through 120,000 retail accounts.
