About Us
All sources of municipal water are potentially vulnerable to contamination from naturally occurring or human-made substances. These may include microbes, inorganic or organic chemicals, and radioactive materials. Even bottled water typically contains small amounts of various contaminants. The presence of these substances doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Certain populations may be particularly susceptible to water contaminants, including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, individuals with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, elderly persons, and infants. These individuals should seek advice from healthcare providers regarding safe water consumption. Guidelines from the EPA and CDC on reducing infection risk from microbiological contaminants are available through the EPA's hotline.
The Savannah River supplies water to both of our treatment facilities. The Chelsea Water Treatment Plant services northern Beaufort County and provides supplemental water to the Purrysburg facility when needed. The Purrysburg Water Treatment Plant serves southern Beaufort and Jasper counties and can supplement the Chelsea facility. Together, these plants can produce up to 39 million gallons daily. BJWSA also utilizes the upper Floridan Aquifer, an extensive underground rock formation that stores groundwater. We maintain wells in Bluffton, Hardeeville, and Levy to supplement our supply during peak demand periods.

BJWSA operates as a public, nonprofit organization established by South Carolina legislation. Our governance structure consists of an eleven-member board, appointed by Beaufort and Jasper County governing bodies and confirmed by the governor of South Carolina. The General Manager oversees daily operations and reports directly to the board, with support from two Deputy General Managers: one for Finance and Administration, and another for Operations and Technical Services.
