About Us
The Summerville Works Commission and Summerville Commissioners of Public Works have partnered with Santee Cooper to enhance the Santee Cooper Regional Water System. This system features a 40-million-gallon daily treatment facility and 26 miles of transmission pipeline that began operations in 1994.
The regional system processes and delivers water to your local utility, which maintains approximately 600 miles of distribution pipelines. We're proud to report that your municipal water meets or exceeds all federal and state requirements, though monitoring has detected certain regulated elements at safe levels.
EPA regulations ensure tap water safety by limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, similar to FDA regulations for bottled water. Certain populations may be more vulnerable to water contaminants, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS or immune disorders, elderly individuals, and infants. These individuals should consult healthcare providers about water consumption.
Elevated lead levels pose serious health risks, especially for pregnant women and young children. While DCWA Knightsville provides high-quality water, we cannot control materials used in household plumbing. To reduce potential lead exposure, run your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking, especially after extended periods of non-use. For more information about lead testing, visit http://www.Epa.Gov/safewater/lead.
All water sources may contain naturally occurring or man-made substances, including microbes, inorganic/organic chemicals, and radioactive materials. The presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
Our water source is Lake Moultrie, a 60,000-acre freshwater lake in the Catawba-Santee basin. The Source Water Assessment for Santee Cooper Regional Water System is available online at www.Scdhec.Gov/HomeAndEnvironment/Water/SourceWaterProtection/.
