City of Alvin Municipal Water Report Info

Reflecting on Alvin's history reveals much about its future trajectory. The determination of early settlers to establish roots in this area began with a single homestead that paved the way for a thriving community of families and businesses.

Cattle ranching brought the first settlers to the region in 1845, when Elisha and Missouri Thomas constructed a cedar log homestead with their children and workers. As the Santa Fe Railroad expanded westward from Galveston, they built water facilities and cattle holding pens near Mustang Bayou, employing Alvin Morgan as supervisor.

Morgan arrived in 1879, subsequently purchasing land and building a home. As the community grew, he established a general store and saloon, later converting a railroad car into a post office. When residents declared the area a town with 49 inhabitants, they initially named it Morgan, but upon discovering another Texas town had claimed that name, they honored their founder by renaming it Alvin.

In 1893, Alvin became Brazoria County's first incorporated city. While cattle remained the primary industry, agriculture flourished by the 1890s. Strawberries, pears, and figs experienced boom periods, prompting the establishment of a canning facility. Ice shipped from northern states preserved produce until local ice production began, and the Alvin Box and Material Company was founded to manufacture shipping containers.

Several nurseries cultivated Cape Jasmines (similar to gardenias) for distribution. Mild winters encouraged citrus farming in the 1910s, though severe frosts eventually halted this industry. Rice cultivation became a significant agricultural development by 1948, and oil discovery in eastern Brazoria County during the 1930s continues to impact the local economy.

Today, while growth and development drive prosperity, Alvin maintains its small-town atmosphere of family and community. Historic buildings have been renovated to house new businesses. Located in northern Brazoria County, Alvin offers numerous amenities to both residents and visitors alike.
