City of Avondale Municipal Water Company and EPACity of Avondale Municipal Water Report Information
Avondale prides itself as a vibrant community where residents can live, work and enjoy recreational activities. As one of the region's fastest developing areas, the City focuses on providing open spaces and recreational amenities while attracting quality businesses and employers to enhance the local economy.
William "Billy" G. Moore, Avondale's founding father, arrived in Arizona during the late 1860s and established himself near the Agua Fria River by 1880. He named his settlement "Coldwater, Arizona" - referencing both the river and a nearby spring. Moore served as Justice of the Peace for the Agua Fria region, purchased land, established a stage stop, built a saloon and general store, and served as Coldwater's Postmaster from 1901 through 1905.
By the early 1900s, the Coldwater post office relocated to a site near Avondale Ranch. This postal station gradually became known as Avondale, and the Coldwater name was discontinued. The City of Avondale was officially incorporated in December 1946.
Commerce has been central to Avondale's identity since its beginnings near the Coldwater Stage Station in the 1880s. Avondale started as one of the earliest regional stage stations, providing travelers with supplies as they journeyed from Tucson to northern Arizona and California.
Today, Avondale stands as a modern city near the heart of the Phoenix metropolitan area. Over the past decade, the population has grown by more than 114%, making it among Maricopa County's fastest-growing cities. Current population estimates reach 76,238 residents, with projections of 106,000 by 2020. Household income has consistently increased and currently averages over $75,000.
