About Us
The Azle Municipal Water Treatment Plant produces high-quality water that exceeds state standards for both bacteriological and chemical contaminants. Our staff holds Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) certifications and is dedicated to meeting residential and commercial customer needs.
Our treatment process transforms lake water into safe tap water through several key stages:
- Our raw water pump station can deliver 6 million gallons of raw water daily
- Specialized substances are added in mixing chambers to disinfect and remove particulates
- Particles like silt settle to the bottom for removal, further clarifying the water
- Water passes through anthracite and sand filters to remove additional particles
- Additional disinfectant and pH adjustments create non-corrosive water for the distribution system
- 2.5 million gallons are stored onsite with an additional 1.5 million available in elevated storage tanks
- Five High Service pumps supply water and maintain system pressure
- Safe potable water arrives at your home
Individuals with compromised immune systems (chemotherapy patients, organ transplant recipients, those with HIV/AIDS, some elderly, and infants) may be particularly vulnerable to waterborne infections. These residents should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. EPA guidelines on reducing infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
Elevated lead levels can cause serious health issues, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead primarily enters water through service line materials and home plumbing components. While we cannot control materials used in household plumbing, you can minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If concerned about lead content, consider having your water tested. Information about lead in drinking water is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
All water sources, including bottled water, may reasonably contain small amounts of contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
Our water sources include Eagle Mountain Lake. The City of Azle routinely monitors for various contaminants including:
- Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, and agricultural operations
- Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, industrial discharge, and mining
- Pesticides and herbicides from agricultural and urban runoff
- Organic chemical contaminants from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants from natural sources or oil/gas production
If you experience water quality issues like taste, odor, or color, you can help by flushing your pipes through sinks or bathtubs until the problem resolves. Regular hot water heater flushing helps remove mineral deposits that contribute to aesthetic problems.
The City of Azle prioritizes delivering high-quality water to our community and addresses any issues promptly through our water main flushing program.

City of Azle Drinking Water Company and EPACity of Azle Municipal Water Report Information
The Azle area was initially settled by pioneers from Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky. While precise arrival dates aren't documented, Dr. J. G. Reynolds was among the earliest settlers, arriving in 1846. The community was first named Elizabeth Town before becoming Mooresville, named after the local shopkeeper.
At that time, the settlement had no post office, and Tarrant County counted just 664 residents. As population grew, a man named O'Bar established the first post office, and the community was briefly renamed after him. Dr. James Azle Steward, one of the area's few physicians, owned much of the land where Azle now stands and generously donated parcels for businesses, schools, and churches. Eventually, the community adopted his middle name.
Historical points of interest include the first plank house in Azle, built with lumber transported 280 miles from Houston via ox-drawn wagon. The Ash Creek Baptist Church, established in 1872, was Azle's first organized church. Early services were conducted with ministers keeping firearms nearby, while male congregants held rifles across their knees as protection against Comanche raids, which continued until 1873.
While nearby Fort Worth experienced rapid growth between 1856-1880 as a major stagecoach terminal, Azle's population remained relatively static for decades. The town incorporated in April 1957 as a general law community. By 1969, population reached 5,000, qualifying Azle to become a home rule city with the Council-Manager form of government. The current City Charter was adopted in 1971 with periodic amendments to address evolving community needs.
Today, Azle offers suburban amenities with rural character just 14 miles northwest of Fort Worth. This proximity provides big-city conveniences while maintaining small-town appeal. The city is strategically located 25 miles from Alliance Airport and 35 miles from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Encompassing 8.2 square miles, Azle serves approximately 10,960 residents.
