About Us
The City of Gillette water program meetings occur on an "as-needed" basis during regularly scheduled City Council sessions. These council meetings take place at 7:00 PM on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday monthly at City Hall's Council Chambers, located at 201 E. 5th Street.
The COG Water Department conducts regular monitoring for potential contaminants in accordance with Federal regulations. Our most recent monitoring results (through 12/31/18) follow EPA Drinking Water guidelines. We're proud that our municipal water meets or exceeds all Federal requirements, with the EPA confirming Gillette's water is SAFE at current contaminant levels.
Understanding water quality reports can be challenging, so here are key terms:
- Action Level (AL): Contaminant concentration that triggers treatment requirements
- Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL): Highest allowable level of a contaminant
- Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG): Level below which no known health risks exist
- Parts per billion (ppb): One part per billion equals one minute in 2,000 years
- Parts per million (ppm): One part per million equals one minute in 2 years
Municipal water sources include groundwater, rivers, and reservoirs. As water moves through the environment, it can collect various substances including minerals, chemicals, and sometimes contaminants from multiple sources. The EPA establishes limits on certain substances to ensure your tap water remains safe.
Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants—should seek medical advice about their drinking water. Guidelines for reducing infection risk are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
In 2016, the City of Gillette conducted required lead and copper testing in our distribution system. We're pleased to report levels below the Action Level for both substances. While the Water Division provides high-quality water, we cannot control materials used in household plumbing. To reduce potential lead exposure, flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking, especially after periods of non-use.
