About Us
Certain individuals may have increased vulnerability to water contaminants compared to the general population. Those with compromised immune systems—including cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants—face heightened risks. These vulnerable groups should consult healthcare providers about their water consumption. The EPA and CDC offer guidelines on reducing infection risks from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants through their Safe Water Drinking Hotline (800-426-4791).
Our municipal water comes from two sources: surface water diverted from the Wind River via the LeClair irrigation canal (processed at our Water Treatment Plant) and groundwater drawn from 13 wells tapping the Wind River aquifer. Our source water assessment is available at City Hall (816 N Federal Blvd) and on our website, www.riverton.wyoming.com.
All water sources, including bottled water, naturally contain some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate health risks. For more information about contaminants and potential health impacts, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline. Water sources (tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive materials, while potentially collecting substances from animal or human activities.
Common contaminant categories include: microbial contaminants from sewage facilities and wildlife; inorganic contaminants like metals from natural sources or urban runoff; pesticides from agricultural operations; organic chemicals from industrial processes; and radioactive elements from natural sources or mining. The EPA sets regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while the FDA establishes similar standards for bottled water to ensure public health protection.
