Rich in heritage and cultural diversity, Opelousas stands as Louisiana's third oldest city. It represents a vibrant melding of various cultural influences. From its architectural treasures to its significant Civil War history to its abundant Cajun and Creole traditions, the city showcases its diverse cultural tapestry in numerous ways.

Following the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, the region was divided into two sections. The southern portion became known as the Territory of Orleans, now present-day Louisiana. This Territory was subsequently organized into twelve counties, including Opelousas County. By 1805, Opelousas was established as the governmental center for this County. The following year, the original Opelousas County Courthouse was constructed on a central town square. Today, this courthouse area is recognized as a National Historic District.
