City of Palestine Municipal Water Report Info

The City of Palestine (pronounced PAHL-uh-steen) offers comfort and convenience with modern amenities for businesses, residents and visitors alike. Our family-friendly community provides an enhanced quality of life with abundant opportunities for business growth and development.

Location
Palestine, Texas, the county seat of Anderson County, is strategically located 108 miles southeast of Dallas and 150 miles north of Houston, at the intersection of U.S. Highways 79 and 287 in the heart of East Texas' Piney Woods region.

History
Daniel Parker, an early pioneer to East Texas, named Palestine after his former hometown in Illinois. In 1846, the Texas legislature established Palestine in the center of the county to serve as the Anderson County seat.

Transportation and Commerce
Palestine's character has been fundamentally shaped by transportation infrastructure. Initially, the town thrived by shipping agricultural products via the Trinity River. When railroads arrived in 1873, the city experienced a second economic and architectural boom. This prosperity supported prominent residents including politician John H. Reagan and Governor Thomas M. Campbell, while enabling architectural development from renowned designers like Nicholas Clayton and Wesley Clark Dodson.

Economic Opportunities
Palestine maintains its status as a transportation and distribution hub, perfectly positioned to serve Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The city's longstanding relationship with Union Pacific Railroad continues today, complemented by interstate shipping capabilities. Walmart recognized Palestine's strategic location in the 1980s, building their first distribution center outside Arkansas here. That facility still operates as one of only seven Fashion Distribution Centers nationwide.

Quality of Life
Palestine is committed to residents' wellbeing through comprehensive healthcare facilities. The Palestine Regional Medical Center and Palestine Regional Rehabilitation Hospital provide a full spectrum of diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative services through approximately 500 employees, 50 volunteers, and over 80 physicians representing 28 medical specialties.

Tourism and Recreation
Palestine has naturally evolved into a tourist destination due to its rich history. The Texas State Railroad is the state's oldest and most renowned heritage railway. Thanks to community preservation efforts, visitors can enjoy charming bed and breakfasts in restored Victorian homes, modern hotels, and diverse dining options. Popular attractions include the Museum for East Texas Culture, The Texas Theater, and Eilenberger's Bakery.
