LEAD IN MUNICIPAL WATER CONCERNS
Lead can enter tap water when service pipes, fixtures, and solder containing lead corrode through chemical reactions with water, especially in high-acidity or low-mineral content conditions. The most significant risk comes from brass or chrome-plated brass faucets with lead solder, which can release substantial amounts of lead into water, particularly hot water.
To address lead and copper corrosion in municipal water, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). This rule mandates monitoring, treatment, and reporting to prevent lead and copper contamination.
The City of Pleasanton tests between 30-60 single-family homes built from 1982-1986 every three years to comply with EPA requirements. Additionally, Pleasanton's source water undergoes more frequent lead and copper analysis as specified by the State Water Reference Control Board (SWRCB).
