The City of Punta Gorda operates a surface water treatment facility that uses Shell Creek as its primary water source. The water supply is impounded by Hendrickson Dam, creating Shell Creek Reservoir - the fourth largest surface water system within the Southwest Florida Water Management District. This infrastructure was initially constructed in 1964.

Shell Creek Reservoir receives water from two creek systems: Shell Creek from the east and Prairie Creek from the northwest. The total drainage area at Hendrickson Dam spans 373 square miles, creating an approximately 800-acre reservoir containing 765 million gallons of water. The treatment facility can process up to 10 million gallons daily.

The treatment process follows standard protocols including radicalization, sedimentation, and filtration. Alum serves as the primary coagulant to remove large particles, while powdered activated carbon eliminates unpleasant tastes and odors. A specialized polymer assists with sedimentation, and pH adjustments are made throughout the process. A stabilizer is added to the finished water to control corrosion in the distribution system.

Raw water pumped from Shell Creek undergoes aeration via a chute aerator. Following this, powdered activated carbon and alum are introduced and "flash mixed" to ensure proper chemical distribution. The water then proceeds to flocculation basins with variable speed turbines. In the Solids Contact Units, water flows upward through a mass of settled solids and chemicals that act as both coagulant and liquid filter.

The clarified water is treated with chlorine, followed by ammonia to form chloramines, which prevent the formation of carcinogenic byproducts that could occur with chlorine alone. Finally, the water is filtered to remove remaining suspended solids. Caustic soda adjusts the pH and strengthens the water before it enters a clear well where a stabilizer prevents corrosion. The finished water is stored in a 2-million-gallon tank before distribution to homes throughout Punta Gorda.

City of Punta Gorda Municipal Water Report Info

HISTORY OF PUNTA GORDA - The City of Punta Gorda was established in 1884 when surveyor Kelly Harvey, under Isaac Trabue's direction, began work on the Trabue subdivision. This plan was officially filed in Manatee County on February 24, 1885, featuring streets and blocks arranged along the southern shores of the Peace River where it meets Charlotte Harbor.

A distinctive feature of the original design was that every waterfront block was designated as a park - a legacy that continues today with a chain of public parks connected by Harborwalk, a 2.5-mile public promenade.

Incorporated on December 7, 1887, following the railroad's arrival and construction of the Hotel Punta Gorda, the small town thrived on seasonal winter tourism, agricultural trade, and commercial fishing. The community's economic fortunes ebbed and flowed with national economic trends and Florida's real estate cycles through World War II, when the Punta Gorda airfield was constructed for aircrew training.

After the war, a new growth period began in the late 1950s with the development of canal-connected subdivisions in the Punta Gorda Isles and Burnt Store Isles neighborhoods. These new communities attracted northern retirees seeking winter sunshine, excellent recreational fishing, and boating opportunities.

Today, Punta Gorda maintains its small-town atmosphere with waterfront parks, extensive walking and cycling pathways, and a vibrant collection of independent shops and restaurants, all while preserving its unique historical character.
