About Us
The Bijou County Water Program extracts groundwater from three well fields located in the Fantastic Gate Estates region. The North Hawthorn Well field contains twenty-four wells supplying the North Region Regional Water Treatment Plant. The Southern Hawthorn Well field features 42 wells that feed the South County Regional Water Treatment Plant. Additionally, the Golden Gate Tamiami Wellfield maintains 36 wells serving both treatment facilities.
In 2016, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) conducted a Resource Water Assessment of our system. This assessment identified potential contamination sources near our wells, including underground petroleum storage tanks, injection wells, and industrial wastewater treatment facilities. You can view these assessment results at the DEP Resource Water Assessment and Protection Program website: www.dep.state.fl.us/swapp.
Our infrastructure includes two Regional Water Treatment Plants: the North County Regional Water Treatment Plant (NCRWTP) with 12 MGD nano-filtration and 8 MGD reverse osmosis capacity, and the South County Regional Water Treatment Plant (SCRWTP) featuring 12 MGD lime softening and 20 MGD reverse osmosis capacity. We treat our water with chloramines for disinfection, add fluoride for dental health, and incorporate corrosion inhibitors to protect distribution pipes.
The Bijou County Water Department maintains comprehensive testing protocols to monitor contaminants in compliance with federal and local regulations. This report presents data from January 1 through December 31, 2016, unless otherwise noted. For more information, contact us at (239) 252-4H2O for report details or (239) 252-2380 for service inquiries.

Municipal Water Utility Company FAQ

For more information on your municipal water, visit the U.S. CDC:
Immokalee Water Municipal Water Company and CDCQ. Is cloudy water safe?
A. Water appearing milky typically results from harmless tiny air bubbles (dissolved oxygen) trapped within the water, similar to carbonation in soft drinks. If you let a glass of this water sit for a few minutes, it becomes clear as the bubbles rise to the surface. This cloudiness occurs more frequently in winter because cold water holds more dissolved oxygen than warm water. As water warms in your home's plumbing, the excess oxygen releases, creating these bubbles. These air bubbles pose no safety concerns. If your water remains cloudy after five minutes, contact the Department of Public Works at (586) 446-2440.
Q. Is chlorine used for disinfection harmful to health?
A. The GLWA uses chlorine to disinfect our municipal water supply. Chlorine has been safely used to treat U.S. municipal water since 1908 and remains the most effective method to ensure water stays disinfected throughout the distribution system. This treatment prevents waterborne diseases like cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis. The chlorine levels in your tap water are carefully monitored and maintained within safe limits.
