WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO FIND IN MY TAP WATER? The sources of municipal water (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water flows across land surfaces or through underground layers, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive materials, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.

Potential contaminants in source water include:

  • Microbial contaminants (viruses and bacteria) from sewage facilities, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants (salts and metals) either naturally-occurring or resulting from urban runoff, industrial discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, stormwater runoff, and residential usage
  • Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile compounds from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that occur naturally or result from oil/gas production and mining activities

To maintain tap water safety, the EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems, while the FDA sets similar limits for bottled water to provide equal public health protection. All water sources, including bottled water, can reasonably be expected to contain at least minimal amounts of some contaminants, though their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

2017 ANNUAL MUNICIPAL WATER QUALITY TEST RESULTS: Marco Island routinely monitors for contaminants in your municipal water according to Federal and State regulations. The testing results reflect water produced from both city treatment plants. Data from before January 1, 2017 represents the most recent testing conducted under applicable regulations.
