About Us
The Suwannee Aquifer lies approximately 700 to 900 feet beneath Sanibel and Captiva Island's surface. This natural groundwater source serves as the raw water supply for island residents. The water contains various minerals and has a moderate sodium content, making it brackish in nature.
Due to its salt content, Reverse Osmosis (R.O.) technology is Island Water Association's primary treatment method. This process effectively removes not only salt but many other minerals, with chlorination applied afterward for disinfection purposes. The facility currently maintains a 5.99 MGD processing capacity.
Island Water Association Inc. conducts regular contaminant monitoring in accordance with federal and state regulations. Our monitoring data from January 1st through December 31st, 2017 is presented in our annual report, along with historical results for comparison. As water travels through underground formations, it can accumulate various substances including microbes, inorganic and organic compounds, and radioactive materials.
All water sources, including bottled water, reasonably contain some level of contaminants. However, their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. Data presented from before January 2017 represents our most recent testing conducted under applicable regulations.
For additional information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. Lead and copper testing results from June 2016 showed levels well below action thresholds, with copper at 0.11 ppm (action level: 1.3 ppm) and lead at 0.66 ppb (action level: 15 ppb).
Regarding lead specifically, elevated levels can pose serious health risks, particularly to infants, young children, and pregnant women. If concerned about lead in your water, consider having it tested and flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before use.
Our continuous monitoring detected Radon in 2 out of 2 finished water samples tested in 2017. While no federal regulation exists for Radon in drinking water, prolonged exposure to airborne Radon may cause adverse health effects.
In 2017, the Division of Environmental Protection conducted a Resource Water Assessment on our system. Their research identified four potential contamination sources with low susceptibility levels near our wells. Complete assessment results are available through the FDEP Source Water Assessment and Protection Program website.

The Island Water Association, Inc. operates as a non-profit, member-owned municipal water utility serving Sanibel and Captiva Islands along Florida's Gulf coast in Lee County. Our treatment process incorporates reverse osmosis technology with water drawn from deep wells.
The utility is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and employs 31 staff members across various departments including Production, Distribution, Engineering, Maintenance, and Administration. Currently, we maintain 5,039 active accounts throughout our service area.
Our facility is located at 3651 Sanibel-Captiva Road, just west of Rabbit Road at mile marker 2 on San-Cap.
