City of South Houston Municipal Water Company and EPACity of South Houston Municipal Water Report Info
South Houston is situated adjacent to Pasadena, approximately two miles southeast of where Interstate Highway 45 intersects with State Highway 3 in southeastern Harris County. Originally established as Dumont in 1907 by C. S. Woods of the Western Land Company, the community had established a post office by 1910 and was incorporated as South Houston by 1913.
The city's first elected mayor was Walter Tharp. During its early development, local farmers utilized the Galveston, Houston and Henderson Railroad to transport produce from their truck farms, including strawberries, figs, and various vegetables. The Houston Ship Channel's development later facilitated industrial growth inland.
South Houston experienced significant growth between the 1940s and mid-1960s. Among its notable residents was George Christy, who served as mayor from 1949 to 1951 and again from 1960 to 1964. As a circus owner, Christy's elephants famously assisted in constructing Spencer Highway.
By 1960, South Houston's population reached 7,523 residents. The city had attracted various small industries, including manufacturers of asphalt, wire products, oilfield chemicals, and concrete conduits. The 1980 census recorded 11,782 residents and 303 businesses, primarily in retail and service sectors.
Today, the community offers abundant municipal recreation facilities and public services, including modern firefighting equipment and a library. Nearby attractions include Hobby Airport, the San Jacinto Battleground, and the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.
