Washington Water Utility Companies

As a Tumwater utility customer, your tap water comes from underground aquifers. These groundwater sources exist beneath the Earth's surface in porous layers of sand and gravel. Groundwater naturally replenishes when precipitation filters down through soil layers in a process called infiltration. Contamination can occur whenever harmful substances penetrate these layers.

The City of Tumwater extracts groundwater through wells and treats it before delivering it to your home through a pressurized distribution system. The water is stored in reservoirs to meet demand and maintain consistent pressure throughout the network. Currently, Tumwater operates 13 wells to ensure reliable water supply for all customers.

Reclaimed water refers to used water that has undergone advanced treatment, making it suitable for beneficial non-potable applications. Washington State classifies reclaimed water into four categories (A, B, C, and D). In our region, LOTT Clean Water Alliance produces Class A reclaimed water—the highest quality available. This water can be safely used for various purposes including:

  • Irrigation of parks, golf courses and landscaping
  • Decorative fountains and ponds
  • Streamflow and wetland enhancement
  • Groundwater recharge

Reclaimed water flows through a separate system of purple pipes, completely isolated from drinking water and wastewater infrastructure.

Stormwater is rain and snowmelt that flows across impervious surfaces into nearby waterways. Ideally, this runoff is captured by stormwater facilities that allow sediments and pollutants to settle before the water enters streams or lakes. These facilities help protect water quality while reducing erosion and flooding risks.

The Stormwater Utility, funded by ratepayers through the Tumwater Public Works Department, works to minimize flooding, erosion, and pollution caused by stormwater runoff while safeguarding aquatic habitats and recreational areas.

Wastewater includes any water that requires treatment after household or commercial use. The sanitary sewer system collects wastewater from Tumwater homes and businesses (except those on septic systems) and transports it to the LOTT Clean Water Alliance treatment facility in downtown Olympia. LOTT—a partnership between Lacey, Olympia, Tumwater, and Thurston County—purifies wastewater through comprehensive physical and biological treatment processes.
