City of Waxahachie Municipal Water Report Info
Established in 1850, Waxahachie has evolved into a crucial rural, commercial, educational, retail and transportation hub in North Texas. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily due to its thriving cotton industry.

Thanks to the success of Waxahachie's early cotton entrepreneurs, Ellis County quickly became the nation's largest cotton-producing county in the early 1900s. Cotton played a vital role in Waxahachie's initial development, leading to the establishment of numerous cotton-related industries, including one of Texas' first textile mills.

The robust economy of the late 1800s and early 1900s contributed significantly to a construction boom, resulting in rapid downtown development and beautiful residential neighborhoods featuring elegant Victorian homes. In 1895, the historic Ellis County courthouse was completed and remains the town's most impressive landmark today, attracting visitors from around the world.

The Great Depression of the 1930s severely reduced cotton demand, forcing most gins and textile mills to close. After World War II, Waxahachie entered the automobile age along with the rest of the nation. The city benefited tremendously from its strategic location at the intersection of U.S. 77 and U.S. 287 at the northwest corner of downtown. With the later construction of Interstate 35, Waxahachie continued to prosper from its proximity to major highways.

Today, Waxahachie remains an attractive destination for developers and residents. Just a short drive from the Metroplex, the city hosts numerous festivals and events throughout the year. In 1997, the Texas State Legislature designated Waxahachie as the "Crape Myrtle Capital of Texas." Each summer, the city's historic streets are lined with hundreds of beautiful pink crape myrtles in full bloom.

The current population exceeds 37,000, with a healthy average growth rate of 3.7%. Waxahachie continues to benefit from its advantageous location at the intersection of I-35 and US 287.
