Clearfield Municipal Authority Municipal Water Company and EPAClearfield Municipal Authority Municipal Water Report Info
The Clearfield Municipal Authority's history dates back to January 1882. That year, the Clearfield Water Company was established as a private investment organization to supply water to Clearfield Borough. By 1904, a second provider called Lawrence Water Company emerged to serve the surrounding Lawrence Township areas.
After its formation, Lawrence Water Company's assets transferred to the Clearfield Water Company, which continued operations until 1945. At that time, Clearfield Borough established the Municipal Authority of Clearfield Borough through an Ordinance. The Authority was incorporated under Pennsylvania's Municipal Authorities Act in August 1945, with a seven-member board appointed by the Borough.
The organization remained unchanged until September 1957. That year, both Clearfield Borough and Lawrence Township were directed by the Pennsylvania Department of Health's State Water Board to proceed with constructing a sewage treatment facility. Construction finished in 1959, and the plant began operations that same year.
The name changed to the Clearfield Municipal Authority, with board representation realigned to include 4 members from Clearfield Borough and 3 from Lawrence Township. Today, the Authority serves approximately 5,500 customers through both Water and Sewer Divisions. The Water Division filters water from 2 reservoirs and 4 wells while maintaining over 400,000 linear feet of water mains. The Sewer Division operates the sewage treatment plant, 5 lift stations, and maintains 170,000 linear feet of sewer interceptor lines.
