PFAS IN WASTEWATER MANAGEMENT

Our Environmental Services team continues implementing our PFAS assessment plan, approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. This initiative identifies and monitors potential PFAS sources entering our Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF). This pollutant reduction approach mirrors our successful mercury minimization program that has been part of our operations for over two decades.

We're dedicated to pollution reduction and collaborate with verified sources to minimize this contaminant in our environment. These sources affect the WRRF's treated discharge to the Grand River – not municipal water supplies.

Monthly wastewater sampling occurs at the WRRF while we monitor identified sources for PFAS. We strive to reduce and eliminate all sewage and pollutant discharges to protect the environment. Our partnerships include sewer customers, regulatory bodies, national associations, universities, and research foundations to develop cost-effective long-term treatment solutions.

PFAS remediation will take years, as understanding these compounds in the environment continues to evolve. We're confident that knowledge, technology, and treatment options will improve over time. Our industrial pretreatment program remains a state leader in PFAS analysis.

COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOW IMPROVEMENTS

Three decades of work has delivered a lifetime of cleaner water. During the 1960s, the city had 59 points where raw or partially treated sewage could overflow into the Grand River, sending billions of gallons into the waterway annually. Today, there are no combined sewer overflows and zero gallons of untreated sewage entering the river, thanks to our comprehensive Sewer Improvement Project.

INDUSTRIAL PRETREATMENT PROGRAM

Effective wastewater treatment requires understanding what enters our system. Our Industrial Pretreatment Program controls toxic substance discharge by monitoring significant industrial users (SIUs). All non-domestic customers complete surveys to gather specific usage data, with facilities designated as SIUs required to obtain discharge permits with specific requirements and conditions.

DENTAL DISCHARGE MONITORING

Our Industrial Pretreatment Program monitors discharge from dental facilities. If you operate a dental practice, you may need to submit a one-time compliance report.

BIOSOLIDS MANAGEMENT

Biosolids are organic materials collected during water recovery. Currently, we extract this material, transport it in sealed vehicles, and deliver it to landfills. Grand Rapids maintains certification as an Environmental Management System with the National Biosolids Partnership, ensuring efficient operations that protect our environment.
