Danvers Water Department Municipal Water Report Info

The historic Endicott Estate was acquired by Joseph Peabody, Salem's wealthiest shipping merchant, during the War of 1812. For over 140 years, this property served as the family's summer retreat. By 1892, Joseph's granddaughter Ellen Peabody Endicott had taken ownership, enhancing both the central house (Glen Magna) and surrounding grounds.

Following Ellen's death in 1926, her son William Crowninshield Endicott Jr. continued improving the estate until his passing in 1936. He brought the Derby Summer House (built 1794) to the property in 1901 – a two-story Adamesque structure designated as a National Historic Landmark since 1968. The estate has welcomed two American Presidents: Taft and Cleveland.

In 1961, under Town Manager Robert Curtis, Danvers purchased 165 acres of the property for $330,000, preserving it from becoming a 250-home development. The Danvers Historical Society acquired the remaining central eleven acres and main house.

Dave and Joan Townley were hired in 1972 to develop and implement a master plan for what became Endicott Park. They dedicated 41 years to this beautiful public space, which now attracts nearly 160,000 visitors annually.

Today's park features diverse landscapes including pastoral views, historic farm buildings, orchards, forests, and wetlands, connected by a network of trails. Visitors enjoy hiking, fishing, picnicking, playground activities, sledding, cross-country skiing, and wildlife observation throughout the seasons.

Endicott Park operates 365 days yearly from 9am until sunset. A staff of three full-time and three part-time/seasonal Park Rangers manage the grounds, facilities, and livestock, while also offering earth-oriented recreation programs year-round.
