Water Source: East Windsor MUA Water Department is a public community system with several wells. Our water comes from the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy (PRM) aquifer formation.

1. Where does La Porte's water come from? La Porte's water system is supplied by groundwater from deep wells. The water is pumped from the wells to one of treatment plants before reaching your home.
2. Is the water filtered? Yes. All water entering the distribution system to customers comes from one of the city's two filtration plants. After filtration, it's pumped into the grid-configured distribution system built primarily of iron pipes.
3. Are many chemicals used in treating the water? No, extensive chemical treatment isn't necessary. The well water is essentially safe to drink, but goes through filtration plants for quality enhancement. At these facilities, iron and manganese are removed to prevent plumbing fixture and laundry staining. Hydrogen sulfide is eliminated to remove the rotten egg odor common in local private wells. A minimal amount of chlorine pre-treats the water and maintains quality throughout the distribution network. A small fluoride dose prevents tooth decay, and a tiny amount of food-grade orthopolyphosphate reduces pipe corrosion.
4. How much chlorine and fluoride are in the water? Chlorine in the distribution system typically averages 1 part per million (ppm) while fluoride is maintained at 0.7 ppm. This equals one pound of chemical in 1 million pounds of water.
5. Are there harmful chemicals in the water? La Porte water meets all Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Safe Drinking Water Act Standards for all chemicals and compounds. It's considered a safe, healthy municipal water source.
6. If my tap water appears rusty, is it safe to drink? Because the system uses cast iron pipes, some corrosion occurs. High flow rates from hydrant use or other system activity may stir up rust. If you encounter rusty water, run the cold water tap until it clears and avoid doing laundry meanwhile. The water is regularly tested and remains safe to drink. Please report any quality issues to the water plant so our staff can investigate the specific cause. We have 24-hour staffing and a full-time water quality manager who takes all quality complaints seriously.
7. Is bottled water better than municipal water? There's no quality or safety advantage to bottled water. Store-bought bottled water often comes from municipal systems or similar treatment processes. Bottled water is convenient because it's portable, but you can refill that same bottle with municipal water. A $1 purchase of a 20-ounce bottle could be refilled 2,184 times for $1 at city rates.
8. How can I protect our water from contamination? The most effective action is ensuring you never dispose of anything on the ground that you wouldn't want to drink later. Our local water (both municipal and private wells) comes from sand and gravel aquifers that easily supply water but are also easily contaminated from surface disposal of household, business, or industrial chemicals.
9. What is hard water and is it harmful or beneficial? Hardness measures calcium and magnesium salt concentrations in water, typically present as bicarbonate salts. Water hardness largely results from water contacting soil and rock formations during ground filtration. Both hard and soft waters are suitable for human consumption. In fact, the minerals comprising water hardness are generally healthy. La Porte's water is considered hard, meaning it may form scale in household plumbing, on cooking utensils, or in water heaters. Soap is less effective in hard water and leaves more residue on bathtubs, sinks, and clothing. For those using water softeners, La Porte's water hardness measures approximately 330 parts per million or 19.2 grains per gallon.
