The Ellijay Gilmer County Water and Sewerage Authority operates a conventional water treatment facility with a capacity of 5.5 MGD (million gallons daily). Under license from Georgia's Environmental Protection Division, the facility primarily draws water from the Cartecay River, with usage limited to 4.0 MGD.
When river levels permit, an additional 0.45 MGD can be sourced from the Ellijay River. Originally constructed in 1971 as a modest 0.5 MGD facility, the plant has undergone several expansions to meet growing community demands.
The facility's design allows for straightforward expansion up to 8.0 MGD to accommodate future community needs. The plant has been recognized with both Gold and Platinum Awards for operational excellence and was named "Plant of the Year" in 2013 among Georgia facilities processing between 3.0 and 8.99 MGD. Educational tours of the facility can be arranged upon request.
