Fair Lawn is situated in Bergen County, New Jersey in the northeastern section of the state. According to the 2010 census, Fair Lawn had a population of 32,457 residents. The area's history can be traced to the indigenous Lenni-Lenape tribes and was officially incorporated as a Borough in 1924.

Fair Lawn was originally incorporated as "Fairlawn" through an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 6, 1924, formed from portions of Saddle River Township. The name originated from Fairlawn, the estate home of David Acker, which was built in 1865 and later became the Fair Lawn Municipal Building. In 1933, the borough's name was officially reformatted as "Fair Lawn" Borough.

Geographically, Fair Lawn is located at 40°56'09"N 74°07'03"W (40.935833, -74.117504). According to the US Census Bureau, the borough encompasses 5.201 square miles (13.472 km²), with 5.139 square miles (13.311 km²) being land and 0.062 square miles (0.161 km²) or 1.20% consisting of water.

The borough shares borders with: Paterson (in Passaic County across the Passaic River) to the south and west; Hawthorne across Lincoln Avenue to the west; Glen Rock along Harristown Road, Maple Avenue, the north border of the Nabisco plant and its extension north of Garwood Road and Naugle Drive to the north; Ridgewood at one point in the Saddle River; Paramus across the Saddle River to the east; Rochelle Park at another point in the Saddle River; Saddle Brook along S. Broadway and their extensions through Rosario Court to the south; and Elmwood Park across the Bergen County Line, NJ Route 4 (Broadway), Cyril Avenue, and Willow Street to the south and west.

Fair Lawn Water Department Municipal Water Report Info

The Fair Lawn Water Department operates continuously, 24/7, to deliver a reliable supply of quality municipal water and ensure adequate water quantity. Among approximately 600 public community water systems in New Jersey, the Borough's water system ranks as the 50th largest.

The distribution infrastructure includes roughly 105 miles of water mains, 1,200 fire hydrants, and 4 storage tanks with a combined capacity of 4.5 million gallons. Additionally, the system features 4 pumping stations with a total firm pumping capacity of 17.6 million gallons daily. Water treatment consists of 4 chlorination facilities and 2 packed column VOC treatment facilities capable of processing 4 million gallons daily.

Daily water consumption averages 4.0 million gallons, with peak demand reaching as high as 10 million gallons per day. The NJDEP has granted the Borough permits to operate 16 production wells, approximately 400 feet deep, tapping into the New Brunswick Aquifer. These wells typically provide 55% of the Borough's water supply and are distributed throughout Fair Lawn.

To supplement the well water, the Borough purchases treated water from the Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC) and United Water New Jersey (UWNJ). PVWC supplies about 35% of Fair Lawn's water, primarily sourced from the Pompton and Passaic Rivers. UWNJ provides approximately 10% of the water supply, drawn from four reservoirs: Oradell and Woodcliff Lake in New Jersey, and Lake Tappan and Lake Deforest in New York. Through an extensive regional network of interconnected pipelines, the system can also access water from the Wanaque, Monksville, and Boonton reservoirs when needed.
