Is your tap water safe? Yes. Our water meets most EPA health standards. Tests for over 70 potential contaminants were conducted, with only ten discovered at levels well below safety thresholds.

Why are there contaminants in my water? All municipal water, including bottled water, naturally contains small amounts of some contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, contact the EPA's Safe Water Hotline at 800-426-4791.

What is our water source? Germantown's water comes from the Memphis Sand Aquifer. We work with the State to protect our water supply from potential contamination. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has prepared a Source Water Assessment Plan (SWAP) for untreated water sources serving this system.

The SWAP Report evaluates untreated water sources' vulnerability to contamination. To ensure safety, all public water systems treat and regularly test their water. Sources are rated as reasonably susceptible, moderately susceptible or slightly susceptible based on geological factors and human activities near the source. Germantown's sources are rated as reasonably susceptible.

Tennessee's Source Water Assessment Plan, assessment summaries, susceptibility ratings, and the complete TDEC report to EPA can be viewed at www.tn.gov/environment/programareas/wr-water-resources/water-quality/source-water-assessment. You can also request copies of specific assessments from Germantown water department at 751-7685.

A wellhead protection plan is available for review weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 7648 Southern Avenue. Our water plant staff is always available to assist you.
