This report provides essential information about your municipal water and the efforts made by the Glendale Heights Water Division to deliver safe water to residents. The Village purchases water from the DuPage Water Commission. For more information about this report, please contact: Jeff McCumber, Utilities Division Manager (Facility # CE 0430400) at (630) 260-6040.

We're pleased to report that Glendale Heights' municipal water had no violations and met all water quality standards. No infractions were recorded throughout 2017. We encourage our valued customers to learn more about their water quality by attending our regularly scheduled Village Board meetings on the first and third Thursday of each month. These meetings take place at Village Hall (300 Civic Center Plaza) at 7:30 p.m. You may also attend DuPage Water Commission meetings - call (630) 834-0100 for scheduling information.

The source water assessment for our supplier has been completed by Illinois EPA. For a copy of this information, visit Village Hall or call our Utilities Division Manager at (630) 260-6040. To view a summary of the Source Water Assessment, including Importance of Source Water and Susceptibility to Contamination Determination, visit the Illinois EPA website at http://www.epa.state.il.us/cgibin/wp/swap-fact-sheets.p1

Lake Michigan water is supplied to the DuPage Water Commission through Chicago, which handles all filtration and treatment. The DuPage Water Commission adds chlorine and distributes water through its network of mains and storage tanks. Glendale Heights then delivers this water through pump stations, storage tanks, and water mains without adding chemicals, though we maintain that capability if needed.

The Illinois EPA considers all surface water sources of community water supply susceptible to potential pollution. Lake Michigan's offshore intakes are typically far enough from shore that contamination isn't usually a concern. However, at certain times, contaminants can reach the intakes due to wet weather flows and river reversals. Additionally, the crib structures may attract waterfowl, concentrating waste near intakes and affecting source water quality.

Sources of tap water (both municipal and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over land or underground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and can pick up substances from animal or human activities. Potential contaminants include:

  • Microbial contaminants (viruses, bacteria) from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
  • Inorganic contaminants (salts, metals) from natural sources, urban runoff, wastewater discharges, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
  • Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
  • Organic chemical contaminants (synthetic and volatile compounds) from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, runoff, and septic systems
  • Radioactive contaminants that can be naturally occurring or result from oil/gas production and mining

All drinking water, including bottled water, may contain small amounts of contaminants. Their presence doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.

To ensure safe tap water, EPA establishes regulations limiting contaminant levels in public water systems. FDA regulations set similar limits for bottled water to provide equivalent protection.

Some individuals may be more vulnerable to water contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, people with HIV/AIDS, elderly individuals, and infants) should seek advice from their healthcare providers about drinking water. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing infection risk from Cryptosporidium and other microbial contaminants are available through the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
