Harris County MUD 26 is a municipal utility district established on August 22, 1972, by the Texas Water Rights Commission (now TCEQ). The district operates under Chapter 49 and Chapter 54 of the Texas Water Code and remains under the supervisory jurisdiction of the TCEQ.
Purpose and Authority
The District is authorized to finance, purchase, construct, operate and maintain infrastructure for water supply and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, and stormwater management. The District may issue bonds to fund these facilities and provide solid waste collection services.
Location and Access
Located approximately 22 miles north of downtown Houston and 2 miles northwest of Humble, Texas, the District borders Houston on its east and south boundaries. It sits about 5 miles north of Houston Intercontinental Airport and is accessible via Interstate Highway 45 or U.S. Highway 59 north to Farm-to-Market Road 1960.
Land Use and Development
The District encompasses approximately 1,357 acres, with 1,186 acres being developable. Current development includes 861 acres of single-family residential subdivisions, 27 acres of apartment complexes, 108 acres of commercial development, and 103 acres of commercial/multi-family reserves with utility infrastructure. Two tax-exempt schools and a church occupy about 25 acres.
Water System Infrastructure
Three water supply plants serve the District, with Water Plant No. 1 located just outside the eastern boundary. Emergency water is available through an interconnect with Hunter's Glen Municipal Utility District. The District draws exclusively from groundwater sources and is subject to fees from the North Harris County Regional Water Authority.
