About Us
Holley-Navarre Water System, Inc. (HNWS) consistently monitors your tap water for contaminants in accordance with Federal and State regulations. This report presents findings from January 1 to December 31, 2017, along with data from prior assessments required by regulations.
Our water comes from five HNWS wells and six wells operated by Fairpoint Regional Utility System, Inc (FRUS). Treatment processes include potassium permanganate for iron removal at HNWS wells and chlorine for disinfection. FRUS wells utilize orthophosphates for corrosion control, lime for pH adjustment, and chlorine for disinfection. All wells draw from the Floridan and Sand and Gravel Aquifers.
If present, elevated lead levels can pose serious health risks, particularly for pregnant women and young children. Lead in tap water primarily comes from materials in service lines and home plumbing. While HNWS provides quality water, we cannot control plumbing component materials. If your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. For concerns about lead, consider water testing. Information on lead in drinking water is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.
In 2017, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection assessed our system's source water. No potential contamination sources were identified. Assessment results are available at https://fldep.dep.state.fl.us/swapp/ or through the HNWS website.
Water sources (both tap and bottled) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels across land or underground, it dissolves natural minerals and sometimes radioactive material, and can pick up substances from animal or human activities.
Potential contaminants include:
- Microbial contaminants like viruses and bacteria from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural operations, and wildlife
- Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals occurring naturally or from urban runoff, industrial/domestic wastewater, oil/gas production, mining, or farming
- Pesticides and herbicides from agriculture, urban runoff, and residential uses
- Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organics from industrial processes, petroleum production, gas stations, urban runoff, and septic systems
- Radioactive contaminants occurring naturally or resulting from oil/gas production and mining
EPA regulations limit contaminants in public water systems to ensure safe drinking water. FDA regulations establish similar limits for bottled water. All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably contain at least small amounts of some contaminants, which doesn't necessarily indicate a health risk. For more information about contaminants and potential health effects, call the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants than the general population. Immunocompromised persons (cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, HIV/AIDS patients, elderly individuals, and infants) should seek advice from healthcare providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on reducing Cryptosporidium infection risk are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791).
Please dispose of unused/unwanted medications properly - not down toilets or sinks. Visit http://www.dep.state.fl.us/waste/categories/medications/pages/disposal.htm for guidance.
