You naturally expect your tap water to be clean and safe, and Jordan Valley Water works diligently to provide water that exceeds state and federal requirements. However, did you know you might inadvertently be causing recontamination within your own home?

Here are some important steps to maintain water quality in your home:

  • Filters and Purifiers: All home water filters require regular maintenance. Neglected devices can harbor microbial growth or release filter materials into your tap water. Even your refrigerator filter needs proper upkeep.
  • Backflow Prevention: Water from your plumbing system can potentially flow backward into the distribution system. Hoses, sprinklers, and other water devices pose backflow contamination risks. Consider installing prevention devices on potential hazards. Questions? Call 801-446-2000.
  • Water Softeners: Common in Utah, softeners can complicate water treatment when used incorrectly. Ensure yours operates at the appropriate hardness setting for your water source (Jordan Valley Water averages 10-12 grains per gallon). Excessive salt from improperly calibrated softeners can introduce harmful sodium loads downstream.

Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District Municipal Water Report Info

Hurricane? Are there actually hurricanes in Utah? Of course not—this is Utah, not Florida. The town's name has an interesting origin story. According to local legend, in the 1860s, Mormon leader Erastus Snow experienced a strong gust of wind that blew his hat off while driving a surrey. He reportedly exclaimed, "Well, that was a Hurricane. We'll name this Hurricane Hill."

The area does experience some windy days, particularly during winter months when gusts can exceed 50 miles per hour. Interestingly, locals pronounce Hurricane as "Her-ah-Kun"—helpful to know if you want to blend in with residents.

To explore Hurricane's rich history, visit Utah's Dixie History or the Utah History Encyclopedia. For state history, the Utah State History website offers comprehensive information. For a more personal historical experience, visit the Hurricane Valley Pioneer Heritage Park and Museum at 35 W State St., open Monday through Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM.
